Ski-ter on Charleston Beach

During January, 1971, Charlestonian Alan Rubin wondered about the possibility of organizing a group interested in skiing..  He talked with friends, advertised a bit, and rented a room in one of the downtown hotels.  When the night of January 20, 1971 arrived, so did 95 enthusiastic skiers and would-be skiers.  They elected a board of directors to organize the club.

Just two weeks later, 34 skiers departed from Charleston by bus headed for Sugar Mountain in the Boone, NC area.  Pleasantly warm weather and good skiing made this first ski trip a tremendous success.

The club was chartered, and the members, numbering 152, elected their first slate of officers in November, 1971.  Since that time, the membership has grown to a high of 486 individuals in the 1989-90 timeframe with a current membership of approximately 325.

The first "out west" trip was to Crested Butte, Colorado, in March 1973.  Since then, the club has traveled to the Rockies each year, and in some years hosted trips to New England, Canada and abroad.

Crescent Ski Council

GCSC is a member of the Crescent Ski Council and has participated in the Crescent Race series from its beginnings.  There have been many members who have won NASTAR medals over the years.  In addition to GCSC trips, the Crescent Council sponsors a number of trip options which may be attended by local members.

Activities hosted by GCSC have included cruising the Charleston Harbor, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and to No Where.  Club members have floated down Folly, Edisto and Chattahoochee Rivers, rafted in SC, NC, WV and GA, and kayaked in local waters.  There's been luaus, beach parties, volleyball, baseball, bowling, bicycling, hockey, ice skating and in-line skating.   The club has gathered for the Charleston Cup, St. Patrick's Day in Savannah, comedy shows and seasonal holiday fun.  GCSC members regularly attend Crescent Ski Council conventions at Myrtle Beach.
